Semaglutide is a medication commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes. It belongs to the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. Recently, the FDA approved a higher dose of Semaglutide as a treatment for obesity. It has been shown to be effective in aiding weight loss in overweight and obese individuals when combined with diet and exercise. 

Tirzepatide (brand names Monjouro or Zepbound), is an FDA-approved medication that mimics GLP-1 and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) indicated for adults with obesity, or with excess weight (overweight) who also have weight-related medical problems, lose weight and keep it off. This unique medication that mimics two hormones naturally found in the body works together to stimulate insulin secretion and slow stomach emptying after a meal. It has been shown to be effective in aiding weight loss in overweight and obese individuals when combined with diet and exercise. 

Slows down stomach emptying so that after eating, you feel full longer
Suppresses appetite and food cravings (on average patients eat ~30% less)
Lowers blood glucose levels (without making glucose levels too low)

It is well tolerated overall. However, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and constipation are common.

Nausea is the most common side effect, we can discuss ways to decrease this symptom.

It is an injection given once weekly by subcutaneous route. Doses are increased every 4 weeks as tolerated for weight loss.

Semaglutide is a prescription medication taken once a week via injection for weight loss in adults who have obesity or are overweight and have at least one weight-related health problem. Each person is different but it may take 2 -4 weeks to notice any weight loss.  It is recommended to continue treatment for at least 3 - 4 months to evaluate its effectiveness. The effects of the Semaglutide will vary and may depend on factors such diet and exercise habits.

- Adult patients with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater (obesity), or
- Adult patients with a BMI of 27 or greater (overweight) in the presence of at least one weight-related co-morbid condition (e.g., hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia)

You CANNOT take Semaglutide if you have any of the following conditions:
- Personal or family history of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC)
- Personal or family history of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia, type 2 (MEN 2)
- Prior allergic reaction to Semaglutide or to any of its ingredients* (serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema, have been reported with Semaglutide)
- Personal history of pancreatitis
- Diabetic retinopathy (diabetic eye disease)
- Pregnant or trying to get pregnant
- Breast-feeding (Semaglutide is present in breast milk)
- Less than 18 years old
- Depression with a history of suicidal thoughts

- Renal impairment or end stage renal disease
